Welcome back!

You know, mentioning Tears for Fears in that last post made me homesick for the eighties. Things were SO much simpler when I was a teenager. The only thing I really had to worry about was making my allowance stretch to the next week. There were problems in the world, of course, but they were OUT THERE, not in my little world. Our generation actually started a lot of the things this current generation of teens THINK they started. Like upturned collars on polo shirts… fashion shoe laces… Cabbage Patch dolls…. Wow. Well, we haven’t had a Musical Memory in a while, and so I think I’ll just drag you along on my trip down Memory Lane.

I am inflicting this one on you because my daughter had never even HEARD of “The Love Boat” and I wanted her to see this. Kids today have no clue what it was like to watch television for entertainment without trying to attache what they see to reality, I swear they don’t. And not a good reality either, judging by the popularity of all the cop and hospital shows. Back then, every week you could join one of these mythical cruises and just sit back and feel good. Boy, I miss the good old days!

I played this song for my fourteen year old daughter today, because she was seriously in need of… well, you’ll figure it out. :) I hadn’t heard this song in literally years myself. Seems like this came out around the time when Hank Williams Jr. was having to go into drug rehabilitation or alcohol rehabilitation or whatever the problem was, but I could be really wrong about that. Well, any way you look at it, it’s a great song. Enjoy!

Well, this isn’t exactly a memory, because I am not sure when it came out, and it’s not from MY youth. But my mother posted it on her musical blog a few days ago, and I am posting it here because, while it may not BE a memory, it sure brings back some anyway, for me, and probably for every parent who ever had small children. The song is “Mr. Mom” by Lonestar, and I can verify for you that Pampers really do in fact melt if they make it into the dryer. There are a few other truths in this song as well!

It’s been a while since I did a Musical Memories post, so I figured it was about time. Besides, this song has been running through my head and I need to get it out SOMEHOW:) This song, SUMMER OF 69 by Brian Adams, was a major hit when I was a teen. At the time, no one bothered to notice that in 1969 the singer would have been about… two, maybe. And no one bothered to examine the psychological ramifications of being in the eighties and having a problem getting over the sixties. It was just a great song, and we loved it.

I was WAY past high school when Billy Joel came out with the song “We Didn’t Start the Fire”. Under normal circumstances, that would disqualify it for my “Musical Memory” category, but in all honesty, the song lists so many historic events and headlines, it deserves to be an exception. I am not about to admit how many of the things he mentions in this song I actually remember happening or being talked about! In any case, I hope you enjoy this song as much as I do.

Here is another musical memory for you. Now, I didn’t say all memories were GOOD, did I? This is ZZ Top, and it’s here because one of my daughters was under the mistaken impression that, when I was younger, all the songs had understandable lyrics. I have NEVER been able to understand more than one line of this song. And, given the double entendre possibilities with that title, I am not sure I want to. Anyone out there actually able to understand the words to the song pearl necklace, let me know. Note, I didn’t say look them up… I said UNDERSTAND them:)

Time for another musical memory. Jackson Browne was really big when I was a teenager. The first Jackson Browne song I noticed was “Lawyers in Love”, but I liked this one better. Well, I did until I saw the video. THAT is depressing. My advice is to hit play, listen to the song, and ignore the video completely:)

Time for a music break! My musical tastes are rather eclectic. I don’t really have one particular kind I listen to more than any other. This particular song, an old favorite of mine, delivers a VERY powerful message. It’s Carman singing, and I think this video was from the Gaither Homecoming, but I am not actually sure. In any case, the song is contemporary Christian. Titled “Sunday’s on the Way”, I think it is the best song Carman ever did.

Time for another Musical Memory. When I was a teen, Billy Joel was really popular with the kids who didn’t listen to acid rock… and even with some who did. I think I must have owned, if not EVERY album he ever put out, then at least most of them. His music was played at every homecoming dance and every prom. I managed to find one of my all time favorite Billy Joel songs, and you get to hear it now. So, here is, arguably, the best song Billy Joel ever did… Piano Man.
